SOME UNKNOWN FACTS ABOUT BISHNUPUR GHARANA Bishnupur Gharana
  1. Kheyal started from Ramshankar Bhattachariya’s age. His writings on kheyal is being found "Bramhamoyi Paratpara", on the Raga "Yaman Kalyan".


  2. First maiden Gramophone record in khayal in 1902 " Tara Parameshwari " by Lal Chand Baral,who learnt under Ramprassanna Bandyopadhyay(Vide Sangeet Chandrika) published by Gramophone Concert and Nicole.


  3. First Dhrupad record In 1902 "Naad Bidya Sabse Sera" Raag Darbari,Taal Choutal,by Surendranath Bandyopadhyay published by Gramophone Concert.


  4. Third Gramophone Record on Sitar by Gopeswar Bandyopadhyay


  5. Ramprasanna Bandyopadhyay was the foremost Surbahar and Sitar Artist of India up to 1928(Vide: Sarojini Naidu's memoirs, Pramoth nath chowdhuries writings).

  7. Rabindranath Tagore considered Radhikaprosad Goswami as his mentor and later on his mentor was Gopeswar Bandyopadhyay.

Bhatkhand first came across the Ustads of Bishnupur in a conference in Banaras around 1921/2 and this conference was attended by Radhika Prasad Goswami, Gopeswar Bandyopadhyay and Satyakinkar Bandyopadhyay. They gave trio performance in Dhrupad (Since at that time Dhrupad Artists used to perform duets so in answer to that, they gave a trio performance).After this they gave individual performance.


  10. Satyakinkar Bandyopadhyay also played Sitar in that conference and stood first along with Enayat khan.


  11. Bhatkhand desired to be a disciple of Radhika Prasad Goswami since he found the most authentic renditions of the ragas and the most exhaustive repertoire of songs in Bishnupur Gharana (Reference:-Brammhoman by Dilip Kumar & Jugantor)


  12. K. Mullik, a Muslim artist was very popular (1915 - 1930) recorded many discs on Bangla Kheyal and was a disciple of Gopeswar Bandyopadhyay.


  13. In 1921 when Prince Edward came to visit India, six artists of various gharanas were chosen to perform six Ragas for six Seasons. Three of them were from Bishnupur Gharana .Gopeswar Bandyopadhyay, Satyakinkar Bandyopadhyay and Khetra Mohan Goswami.


  14. Satyakinkar Bandyopadhyay sang Bangla Kheyal for the first time in Radio (1976) which was recognized by All India Radio.


  15. Amiya Ranjan Bandyopadhyay is the first PhD holder in Bengal in 1968 in Esthetics of Music.

  19. Santanu Bandyopadhyay invented the mystery behind taan which was recognized by Bowling Green University of USA in 2004.He is also working on the improvement of voice with the help of Vocal Science.


  20. Santanu Bandyopadhyay was the first Indian who performed at Lincoln Memorial in Washington, USA in 2006.


  21. In the history of Bengal, the full form performer above eighty (80) years of age belonged to and still belongs to the VIshnupore Gharana. They are: Gopeswar Bandyopadhyay of 83 years [1880-1963](Uncle and Guru of Satyakinkar)
    Surendra Nath Bandyopadhyay of 86 years [1886-1972](Brother of Gopeswar Bandyopadhyay)
    Satyakinkar Bandyopadhyay of 81 years [1899-1980](Father and Guru of Amiya Ranjan) Amiya Ranjan Bandyopadhyay of 81 years.

  22. The style of playing Sitar in the Bishnupur Gharana was with the help of two fingers. The ladies finger was used for the "Chikari" and this was started by Ramprasanna Bandyopadhyay, followed by his son Jogesh Chandra Bandyopadhyay and Ashesh Chandra Bandyopadhyay and also by his brothers Gopeswar Bandyopadhyay and Surendranath Bandyopadhyay. Then later on by Gopeswar Bandyopadhyay's nephew Satyakinkar Bandyopadhyay. But after Satyakinkar Bandyopadhyay the original style of playing sitar of this Gharana was not continued forward. Satyakinkar Bandyopadhyay died in the year 1980.

  23. Nihar Ranjan Bandyopadhyay is the junior most artist who stood first in dhrupad in All India Radio music competition at the age of sixteen.
