Bishnupur Gharana is one of the most significant and important genre in Indian Classical Music. Founded about two hundred years back, on the age-old tradition of Indian guru-shisya parampara, Bishnupur Gharana is the only genre from Bengal. In the 18th century Bishnupur was the capital of the Hindu kingdom, now it belongs to the district Bankura in the state of West Bengal, India.

Bishnupur was then a flourishing kingdom under the second Mallaraj Raghunath Singh, who was a great patron of music. Conditions in Delhi and the northern states of India were not that conducive; consequently the music Maestros started migrating to different parts of India. Many of them came to Bishnupur. Bahadur Khan, a descendent of the legendary Tansen, was one of them; he became the court singer. The common man was also part of this budding musical scenario, and the Maestros started accepting students. Two students emerged as the most promising: Gadadhar Chatraborty and Ramshankar Bhattacharya. In the subsequent years Ramshankar Bhattacharya proved himself to be an outstanding student and eventually established a vocal style that was distinctly his own. This vocal style spread across Bishnupur and came to be known as the Bishnupur Gharana.
